Natural Herstories

Natural Herstories

Exhibition on View: September 10 - Nov 7, 2026

Opening Reception: Thursday, Sep 10, 2026 in conjunction with BROMO ART WALK

Maryland Art Place (MAP) is pleased to present “Natural Herstories" exploring womxn artists’ complex relationships with the natural world, with a particular focus on artists who employ nature as an act of reclamation against colonialist narratives within their work.

“Natural Herstories” examines the intersections of patriarchy, colonialism, and systems of classification embedded within institutions such as natural history museums, the natural sciences, and the tradition of taxidermy. The exhibition draws parallels between the historical exercise of male power over nature, animal bodies, and female bodies alike. Through this framework, the exhibition proposes that womxn artists engage the natural world as both subject matter and a form of resistance, challenging histories of domination and subjugation imposed upon both the environment and the bodies that inhabit it.

About Maryland Art Place

Maryland Art Place (MAP) is a nonprofit contemporary arts organization founded in 1981 in Baltimore, Maryland. It was created by a coalition of artists, community leaders, and supporters who wanted to expand opportunities for Maryland’s visual artists and increase public access to contemporary art. With early support from the Maryland State Arts Council, MAP officially incorporated in 1982 and quickly became an important cultural institution in the region.

MAP’s mission is to inspire people throughout the region by championing creatives and cultivating engagement between artists and the public. We imagine a world in which the arts are universally respected, freely expressed, and understood as culturally fundamental. Today, MAP is located at 218 West Saratoga St and remains a central force in the city’s BROMO Arts and Entertainment District, continuing its mission to connect artists and the public through innovative contemporary art programming.

Our Mission

Maryland Art Place (MAP) inspires, supports, and encourages artistic expression through innovative programming, exhibitions, and educational opportunities while recognizing the powerful impact art can have on our community. MAP creates a dynamic environment for artists of our time to engage the public by nurturing and promoting new ideas. MAP has served as a critical resource for contemporary art in the Mid-Atlantic since 1981.
