Deck the walls by giving the gift of art this holiday season! Maryland Art Place (MAP) is excited to host its 14th annual UNDER $2500 affordable art sale where artwork is sold on a first-come-first-served basis right off our gallery walls! Newly rebranded as UNDER $2500 - this event promotes the purchase of artwork by artists in the Maryland region. Guests can expect to mingle with other artists, collectors, patrons, and general art enthusiasts at the event. Take your purchases home with you the night of the event. Gift wrapping will be available on-site! 

The opening night sale (physical) will take place Friday, November 20 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. (ticketed) and then again on Saturday, November 21, 2026 from Noon - 4 p.m. (free). Saturday is a ‘last chance’ opportunity to physically snag any artworks that remain on MAP’s walls. Tickets are $45 for opening night and can be purchased at the door or in advance HERE.

A Message To Our Patrons: We are so excited to announce that this year is MAP’s 45th Anniversary! What makes 45 years meaningful is not just the number. MAP is a testament of time and commitment to service in the Arts over decades. Since opening in 1981, MAP has served as a critical resource for contemporary art in Maryland. 

As part of the 45th, MAP has also been undergoing a series of critical capital improvements from an elevator modernization to a brand new lobby for the public to enjoy! Join us for a cheerful evening with an open bar, light fare, and some holly jolly tunes. (and MAP’s signature holiday trees!

A virtual sale and exhibition will also take place and will be featured online HERE from Saturday, November 21 @ 10 a.m. – BLACK FRIDAY, November 27 @ 10 p.m. Artwork will NOT be available to view online until Saturday, November 21 @ 10 a.m. Be sure to register in advance in the interim! Registration is free.

Virtual Buyers Sales & Pick Up: Sold artworks from the virtual auction need to be delivered by the artist to MAP after the sale closes November 28th. MAP is aiming for all sold work to be on site for Buyer pick up by Tuesday, December 1 just in time for the holidays. Buyers will be notified once your purchase is secured and onsite at MAP. 

BUYERS - Please make sure your artwork is at MAP before coming to pick it up. The pickup window will be December 1 – December 5, from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. or by appointment. All artwork will be wrapped and ready to fulfill its destiny as the perfect holiday gift! Maryland Art Place, in partnership with Hotel Indigo Baltimore, is pleased to present VILLAGER: sovereign is my tradition, a solo exhibition by Baltimore-based artist, VILLAGER. The exhibition is on view at Hotel Indigo, located at 24 West Franklin St. from September 19 - November 13, 2026 . A public reception will take place on Sunday, October 18 from 2 PM to 4 PM and the Artist Talk/Closing Reception will be take place on Sunday, November 8 from 2 PM to 4 PM.

Artist Bio

VILLAGER (b. Abdulrasheed Adekunle Adaranijo), they/them, is a Nigerian-born contemporary transdisciplinary artist and cultural producer currently based in Baltimore, MD. Formally trained as a Water Microbiologist and Environmental Researcher, VILLAGER earned a B.S. in Environmental Chemistry from Towson University and is currently studying in the Leroy E. Hoffberger School of Painting MFA Program at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA).

Artist Statement

Actively investigating the liminal intersections of material memory and sensory intelligence, migration, Yorùbá knowledge production, and postcolonial African identity, VILLAGER synthesizes their paintings into a dynamic topography of critical inquiry into the poetics of relational interplay between objects, bodies, and spaces, utilizing layers and applications of color, movement, rhythm, layering, texture, pattern, scarification, and mark-making to examine how form, design (beauty aesthetic), function, and content intersect to produce alternate ways of seeing, being, and knowing rooted in the post-colonial Afro-futurist consciousness. Their work is often characterized by undulating and errant, neural-like, semi-circular woven patterned marks and gestural scars that take form through an amalgamation of abstraction, figuration, and collaging traditions, emerging as a sovereign creolized visual language that engages questions of culture, identity, consciousness, and belonging. Through their work, VILLAGER ultimately invites the viewer to reexamine what it means to be shaped and transformed by what we sense, experience, know, remember, and sustain.
