Critics’ Residency is MAP’s longest running and most respected annual program. Now in its 21st year, the Critics’ Residency program remains dedicated to fostering a collaborative relationship between artists and writers. This year’s highly-regarded critics, Irving Sandler and Eleanor Heartney, selected participants through a call for entry and came to Baltimore for a weekend last fall to make artist studio visits in and around the Baltimore area. Throughout the winter, critics mentored writers, helping to define their critical writing, as artists completed new work for this exhibition.

This year’s Critics’ Residency participants came together once again for a Public Forum scheduled for Saturday, May 5th at 2pm .  Participants shared their experiences having been a part of this year’s program, while discussing the state of contemporary art in our region and beyond. The forum was moderated by Cornel Rubino, a regarded artist whose knowledge of contemporary art will serve to encourage valuable discourse amongst program participants and audience members.

Participating Artists: Alzaruba, Anne Chan, Breon Gilleran, Maren Hassinger, Maria Karametou, Benjamin Piwowar, Sofia Silva, and Mary Walker

Participating Writers: Al Miner and Ding Ren

Fact: The Critics’ Residency program served as a pilot program for the National Endowment for the Arts in the early eighties!
