The Photograph as Representation and Reflection of Cultural Objects

Fabian Concalves Borrega, Curator

Fabian Borrega’s exhibition, The Photograph as Representation and Reflection of Cultural Objects demonstrates how artists use objects as representations of culture—understanding and associating culture as an accumulation of facts, emotions, and stories. The exhibition seeks to explore both subjectivities--that of the artist and the medium combined.

Artists in the exhibition include: Luis Delgado Qualtrough, Kathryn Dunlevie, Katia Fuentes, Lucy Gray, Susannah Hays, Germán Herrera, Mary Daniel Hobson, Javier Manrique, Deborah L. O’Grady and Sharon Wickham.

Conversations Most Intimate: The Lens of Myra Greene

Jeffreen M. Hayes + Bennie F. Johnson, Curators

Hayes and Johnson's exhibition Conversations Most Intimate: The Lens of Myra Greene addresses notions of beauty and the human body in today’s visually stimulated society, where the ideals of perfection are often unrealistic and unattainable.

Greene’s self-portrait series, a body of work manipulated in order to produce abstract, murky images that are at times undecipherable, forces the viewer to examine the works closely as to identify the body’s presence. By photographing specific body parts such as the stomach, back or collar bone, the body becomes dissected, stimulating the viewer’s response to their own thoughts and issues surrounding body image.

The Alex. Brown & Sons Charitable Foundation, Inc. is proud to partner with  Maryland Art Place in support of the Fourth Annual Curators’ Incubator Program.
