Deck the walls by giving the gift of art this holiday season! Maryland Art Place (MAP) is excited to host its 11th annual UNDER $500 affordable art sale where artwork is sold on a first-come-first-served basis right off our gallery walls! UNDER $500 promotes the purchase of artwork by artists in the Maryland region. Guests can expect to mingle with other artists, collectors, patrons, and general art enthusiasts at the event. Take your purchases home with you the night of the event. Gift wrapping will be available on-site! 

The opening night sale (physical) will take place Friday, November 17 from 6 pm to 10 pm (ticketed) and then again on Saturday, November 18, 2023 from noon - 4pm (free). Saturday is a ‘last chance’ opportunity to snag any artworks that remain on MAP’s walls. Tickets are $30 for opening night and can be purchased at the door or in advance at UNDER5002023.givesmart.com. 

This year’s theme is WINTER WONDERLAND! Please come in your whitest attire! MAP will have holiday trees on display. Enjoy a cheerful atmosphere with an open bar, light fare and some holly jolly tunes by DJ Amsies and Drag Queen Brooklyn Heights! 

A virtual sale and exhibition will also take place and will be featured online HERE from Saturday, November 18 at 10 am – Black Friday, November 24 at MIDNIGHT. Artwork will NOT be available to view online until November 18 at 10 am. Be sure to register in advance in the interim! Registration is free.

Virtual Buyers Sales & Pick Up: Sold artworks from the virtual auction need to be delivered by the artist to MAP after the sale closes November 24th. MAP is aiming for all sold work to be on site for Buyer pick up by Tuesday December 5th just in time for the holidays. Buyers will be notified once your purchase is secured and onsite at MAP. BUYERS - Please make sure your artwork is at MAP before coming to pick it up. The pickup window will be Dec 5 – Dec 9, from 11am – 4 pm or by appointment. For immediate release Wednesday, September 13:  Presented by Richard B. Talkin Family Art Gallery, and curated by Maryland Art Place (MAP), “Warp & Weft” highlights female artists working in fiber. 

Women and their relationship to fiber have long been intertwined throughout history. Athena, goddess of war strategy, wisdom, justice and crafts was especially known for weaving. It is told that she made the first human woman’s dress for Pandora, teaching Pandora how to weave herself. This legacy was mirrored in the matriarchal tendencies of women, passing down their generational knowledge and know-how to their daughters. This was often seen with quilting, as example, which largely began out of necessity, eventually turning to more of an art form as techniques and needlework advanced.

The female role has increased tenfold over the last five decades to encompass domestic, emotional and financial responsibilities.  Perhaps women today have become the “Warp,” the generally stronger thread in the weave: the foundation for the “Weft” that flows between.

Warp & Weft includes artworks by Jennifer McBrien, Karin Birch, Pamela Thompson, Bonnie Crawford, Sasha Baskin, Katie O’Keefe and Christine Wolfe Strong. Taking a contemporary approach to age old techniques, the exhibition will include everything from felting, embroidery, stitching and weaving

The Richard B. Talkin Family Art Gallery features work from artists in the college community, giving our students, alumni, and community artists the experience of organizing and presenting local artwork.

Zeke’s: Generation: Crit II

Zekes’ Coffee Shop and Maryland Art Place (MAP) are pleased to present Generation: Crit II, an exhibition featuring artworks from a local Maryland Art Crit Group, The Salonistas: Loose Threads. The Salonistas is a tapestry of friends with individual art practices whose unifying thread is to connect with one another and gain inspiration and insight into their work through feedback. This group includes accomplished artists who have won grants and awards and exhibited both nationally and internationally. Their career fields are equally diverse, including teaching, engineering, graphic design, and medicine. The Salonistas create space for deeper meaning to evolve, forming relationships of trust and camaraderie while seeking fresh angles and new perspectives, all while embracing the light, and dark, laughter, and pain of creating, as they come together to form a new gestalt.

Generation, is a series of exhibitions developed by MAP to promote the work of artist groups or collectives who come together to support, critique and inspire one another.  Join us for the opening reception held at Zeke’s Coffee located at 4719 Harford Road on Saturday, December 9 from 12 to 2 pm.

Zeke's Coffee Shop and Maryland Art Place (MAP) are pleased to present Generation: Crit I, an exhibition featuring artworks from a local Baltimore Arts Collective, Gossip Girl. Gossip Girl Collective was conceived by a group of Maryland-based artists who work in a variety of media, come from diverse backgrounds and are in different stages of their art careers and congregate to build community and connections with artists and art professionals in the area. Generation, is a series of exhibitions developed by MAP to promote the work of artist groups or collectives who come together to support, critique and inspire one another.  Join us for the opening reception held at Zeke’s Coffee located at 4719 Harford Road on Thursday, September 14 between 5pm  and 7pm.

Maryland Art Place in partnership with Hotel Indigo Baltimore is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Maryland-based artist, Grace Doyle. The exhibition is on view at Hotel Indigo Baltimore, located at 24 West Franklin St.

About the Artist: 

Through paint, Grace Doyle explores her friends and family in quiet, introspective moments. Her compositions reveal a vulnerable side of the human experience that is only unveiled when individuals are not performing or fulfilling societal roles. She is interested in the inner person as well as what they project outward. Patterns are used as camouflage and employed to set a mood. Strong light, both natural and artificial, becomes a subject itself, competing with the figures. Grace captivates the viewer using richly painted surfaces with mesmerizing patterns and lush vegetation, encouraging self-reflection and curiosity.

Biography

Grace Doyle (b. 1988) lives and works in Baltimore, MD. She received an MFA from Towson University in 2023, an MBA from the University of Baltimore in 2019, and a BFA from MICA in 2009.

Press Announcement April 29, 2023: Maryland Art Place in partnership with Hotel Indigo Baltimore is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Maryland-based artist, Mike McConnell. The exhibition is on view at Hotel Indigo Baltimore, located at 24 West Franklin St. from April 13 to August 17. A public reception will take place Thursday, May 18 from 6 to 9 pm in the Hotels Poets Modern Cocktails and Eats.

About the Artist: 

A 1975 graduate of the Maryland Institute College of Art, Mike McConnell worked for more than 30 years as an illustrator before focusing on his fine art. He often turns to nature for inspiration for the vivid visual stories he tells. He uses paint in a collage-like way, cutting out shapes with vibrant colors on handmade wood panels, paper, and found material. McConnell won the President’s Best of Show award for the 2016 Biennial Maryland Regional Juried Art Exhibition for his painting Bear Carver. He is also a 2016 and 2019 Maryland State Arts Council Individual Artist Award winner and a 2017 finalist for the 13th Annual Bethesda Painting Awards.

Maryland Art Place (MAP) is thrilled to partner with N2K Networks again this year to solicit the replication, reproduction and acquisition of a work of art indicative of “Creating Connections” and cybersecurity. MAP is working with N2K to offer a unique opportunity to female and female identifying visual artists of the greater Baltimore metropolitan area. Collectively, MAP and N2K wish to acquire and license the image of a work of art. The image of that artwork will be reproduced in a limited edition and presented to the guests of N2K’s 2023 Women in Cybersecurity event to be held on October 19, 2023 at the International Spy Museum in Washington, DC.

ABOUT “CREATING CONNECTIONS”: We live in a time where cyberspace has become inextricably linked to the lives of individuals and organizations of all kinds. Cyberspace is the medium of global commerce and communication, and it is one of the most important factors in the social, political, and technological changes we see occurring today. N2K provides concise and relevant daily briefings and podcasts on the critical news happening across the global cybersecurity domain. In an industry overloaded with information, we also help individuals and organizations rapidly find the news and information that's important to them.

The aim of N2K’s reception is to facilitate connections among women working in cybersecurity, and N2K would like to acquire a work of art that reflects the theme of “creating connections.” Inherent in the idea of connections is the idea of networks—social networks, computer networks and support networks—which may be an important point of departure for acquired or commissioned work. This opportunity is open to women and women-identifying artists living and working in the greater Baltimore metropolitan area.
 

The selected artist(s) will be joining a wonderful roster of artists as this program has developed over the last decade. They are: Claire Girodie (year 14’), Anna and Caroline Zellhofer (year 15’), Lindsey McCulloch (year 16’), Carmen Martini (year 17’), and Shanthi Chandrasekar (year 18’), Jackie Hoystead (19’), and Marica Wolfson-Ray (22’). Note: there was a break in this program due to Covid-19.

General Guidelines & Information

• MAP only accepts 2-D works for reproduction - photography, painting, mixed media or similar welcomed.
• All works must be no less than 4 X 4” and no more than 24 X 20”.
• The reproduction edition will be decided on, and agreed-upon at a later date, but will not exceed 500.
• All reproductions will receive a ‘chop or seal’ noting N2K Networks as the publisher.
• All reproductions will be printed on an agreed upon archival fine art paper, expense absorbed by N2K Networks.

**Artist agrees to not reproduce the selected artwork at the agreed-upon dimensions of this project as this will devalue the edition. Likewise, N2K Networks agrees not to reproduce the image after the edition has ended.

N2K Networks will cover scanning fees/photography associated with the reproduction.

Artist agrees to use the artwork image for press and promotional purposes related to this project and event.

Artist will remain the owner of image copyright.

Artist is invited to attend the Women in Cybersecurity reception on Thursday, October 19, 2023 at the International Spy Museum in Washington, DC.

Gerry LaFemina is the author of over twenty books, most recently The Pursuit: A Meditation on Happiness (creative nonfiction) and Baby Steps for Doomsday Prepping (prose poems). A noted literary arts activist who has served on the Board of Directors of the AWP and edited numerous literary journals and anthologies, LaFemina is the former director of the Center for Literary Arts at Frostburg State University, where he is a Professor of English, serves as a Mentor in the MFA Program at Carlow University and is a current Fulbright Specialist in Writing, Literature, and American Culture. In his “off” time he is the principal songwriter and front man for Coffin Curse recording artists, The Downstrokes

TRIENNIAL EXHIBITION

In celebration of the talented and diverse array of artists across the state, the Maryland State Arts Council (MSAC), and Maryland Art Place (MAP) are pleased to present the third Maryland State Arts Directory exhibition this month. The triennial exhibition focuses on visual artworks, literary works, and performers in the ever-growing Maryland Arts Directory, and will be held in tandem with the Bromo Arts  Entertainment District Spring Art Walk.

Maintained by MAP for more than 25 years, the Maryland Arts Directory originated as a regional resource conceived by MSAC. Curators, collectors, and patrons could physically visit MAP to review new visual artworks using slides. As time went by, slides became outdated and an official online resource was created to make access to artworks much more accessible.

The Directory is a free online platform that showcases the high-caliber, diverse, and relevant work of Maryland’s artists and arts organizations and promotes the vitality of Maryland’s arts communities. Collectively, MSAC and MAP aim to present a comprehensive survey of Maryland artists for the Triennial exhibition. "We are excited to collaborate with MAP and work with these jurors to showcase the breadth and depth of the work of Maryland artists," said MSAC Executive Director Steven Skerritt-Davis. "The Directory as an online resource is invaluable, and having the chance to experience participating artists work in person is sure to be inspiring"

This year’s roster of talented jurors includes Jayme McLellan (visual art) - Founder and Director of Civilian Art Projects; José Ruiz (visual art) – Director and Faculty, Curatorial Practices Program at the Maryland Institute College of Art; Rahne Alexander (performance) – intermedia artist, writer, and editor; and Gerry LaFemina (literary) – acclaimed poet, writer, professor, and critic.

The exhibition will take place on three floors of the MAP building located at 218 West Saratoga Street between Park and Howard Streets in downtown Baltimore City. Parking will be available at the Arrow garage across the street from MAP and street parking will be free after 6 pm. This is a free event.

MT VERNON FIRST THURSDAY'S

TONIGHT!!!!
 

First Thursdays continue in Mount Vernon and Bromo Arts District. [Baltimore, MD] TONIGHT, Thursday, June 1, 2023, art galleries in the Bromo Arts District and in Mount Vernon will remain open until 8 PM with an after-party starting at 8 PM at Current Space featuring two DJs starting at 9 PM – JaySwann and DJ Brimafia. First Thursday was a staple of the Mt Vernon art circuit for many years. Galleries participating in this evening time event include Maryland Art Place, Gallery Blue Door, The Black Genius Art Show, Cotyledon Arts, Black Artist Research Space (BARS), Nomünomü, Unit B, and Current Space. The Walters Art Museum is also open regularly until 8 PM on Thursdays. Check each gallery’s website for current shows, events, and how to access their spaces. Galleries participating are all less than a square mile from each other and are under a twenty-minute stroll from one end to the other.

KIDOOO Calling all Elementary, Middle School, and High School level artists!

KIDOOO INSTALL & ART WORKSHOP:

Maryland Art Place (MAP) is happy to continue KIDOOO, a youth version of Out of Order!  KIDOOO was created as an opportunity for young artists to exhibit their work in a major arts venue, expanding MAP’s services to students in elementary, middle, and high school level arts classes.

The opening of KIDOOO will take place in tandem with MAP's annual Out of Order event on April 21, 2023.

Any artist is welcome to hang one original work of art on the first-come, first-served installation day of KIDOOO.  The open installation day for KIDOOO will take place on Sunday, April 9, 2023, from 12 pm - 4 pm OR Saturday, April 15 from 1 to 5 pm. To participate in the exhibition, artists must be aged five-sixteen. MAP will host an art-making workshop on the day of installation so participating artists can come to hang out and stay to create! All craft materials will be provided! 

No need to sign up in advance, just come by MAP's 3rd-floor Gallery @ 218 West Saratoga Street in the Bromo Tower Arts and Entertainment District!

Submission Requirements:

• All work must come framed and ready to hang. (size requirement is 24" x 24" or less)
• Only one submission per artist
• Registration is free
• All works must be priced to sell and will be silently auctioned Friday, April 21, 2023, from 6 - 10 pm
• Please document your work prior to arrival. This image will be used for virtual bidding purposes and submitted with your virtual loan agreement.
• All forms will be virtual. You will receive the link to complete the loan agreement when you arrive. There will be volunteers and staff on-site to assist you.

Maryland Art Place (MAP) is pleased to announce it will be this year’s Baltimore Fine Art Print Fair (BFAPF) Cultural Partner.  BFAPF 2022 (its inaugural year) was a tremendous success and is returning March 30–April 2, 2023. After its triumphant debut, the fair returns with nineteen exhibitors offering the latest contemporary art in print. Galleries, dealers, and print publishers from across the United States will present fine art prints, portfolios, and artist books from both established and emerging artists. Patrons may browse, converse, and shop for their latest acquisition.

MAP was incorporated on January 30th, 1981 to educate the general public in the area of contemporary, visual art produced by Maryland artists through exhibitions and performances; serving as an information center for Maryland artists and coordinating activities of other art-oriented institutions and organizations in Maryland. “The Baltimore Fine Art Print Fair is such an incredible event for the city! Call for Artists:

Seeking artists of all disciplines for the Maryland Arts Directory Triennial!

Deadline: Saturday, April 15, 2023

In celebration of the growing talent and diverse array of artists across the state, the Maryland Art Place (MAP) – in collaboration with the Maryland State Arts Council (MSAC) – is seeking artists for the 3rd Maryland State Artist Directory Triennial exhibition (2023). 

Maintained by MAP, the Maryland Arts Directory originated as a regional resource conceived by MSAC. MAP has remained the responsible partner for the care of this critical resource for over 25 years. The Maryland Arts Directory is a free online platform that showcases the high-caliber, diverse, and relevant work of Maryland’s artists and arts organizations and promotes the vitality of Maryland’s arts communities.

Collectively MSAC and MAP aim to present a comprehensive survey of Maryland artists for the Triennial exhibition to be presented in the MAP gallery beginning Thursday, May 11 and closing Saturday, June 24, 2023. We are seeking visual/media, literary, and performing artists for this year’s exhibition roster.

Eligibility: 

• Artists must be Maryland residents. 
• Artists must have a personal or professional MSAC Arts Directory profile page on msac.org/directory. To create a profile click here. Applications without a link to a directory profile will not be considered.
• Artists must update their directory profile to include an updated bio, artist statement, and at least five artworks or samples based on their discipline area.
• Artists must practice in one of the following disciplines: visual/media, literary, and/or performing artists.
• No organizations may apply.
• Artist duos and groups are eligible to apply. The MSAC profile listed in the application should include all artwork for review. There is space in the application to include the duo or group name and any supporting applicants. 
• IAA awardees and Roster Artists are eligible to apply.

• To create or update your MSAC profile, log in to the Arts Directory by clicking the button below. (Please note it takes between 2 to 3 business days to see your changes reflected on your profile.)
• After updating your profile, click on the Apply Here button below and complete the Google Form application. (Please update your profile in advance of submitting your application materials.) 
• Please indicate if you’re applying to be considered for visual/media, literary, and/or performing artists by selecting one of the three options included on the application.
• You may apply for more than one of the categories but you must complete an application for each category if you wish to apply for more than one. Please update both artwork sections (film/video, audio, visual arts, etc.) on your MSAC profile for consideration for each category. *Each category is juried separately*

KIDOOO Calling all Elementary, Middle School, and High School level artists!

KIDOOO INSTALL & ART WORKSHOP:

Maryland Art Place (MAP) is happy to continue KIDOOO, a youth version of Out of Order!  KIDOOO was created as an opportunity for young artists to exhibit their work in a major arts venue, expanding MAP’s services to students in elementary, middle, and high school level arts classes. 

The opening of KIDOOO will take place in tandem with MAP's annual Out of Order event on April 21, 2023.

Any artist is welcome to hang one original work of art on the first-come, first-served installation day of KIDOOO.  The open installation day for KIDOOO will take place on Sunday, April 9, 2023, from 12 pm - 4 pm. To participate in the exhibition, artists must be aged five-sixteen. MAP will host an art-making workshop on the day of installation so participating artists can come to hang out and stay to create! All craft materials will be provided! 

No need to sign up in advance, just come by MAP's 3rd-floor Gallery @ 218 West Saratoga Street in the Bromo Tower Arts and Entertainment District!

Submission Requirements: 

• All work must come framed and ready to hang. (size requirement is 24" x 24" or less)

• Only one submission per artist

• Registration is free

• All works must be priced to sell and will be silently auctioned Friday, April 21, 2023, from 6 - 10 pm

•  Please document your work prior to arrival. This image will be used for virtual bidding purposes and submitted with your loan agreement.

• All forms will be virtual. You will receive the link to complete the loan agreement when you arrive. There will be volunteers and staff on-site to assist you.

March 14, 2023: Maryland Art Place (MAP) is excited to announce Out of Order (OOO),  MAP’s  Annual Spring Benefit Exhibition & Silent Auction, on Friday, April 21, 2022, at 6 o'clock in the evening. This year marks the 26th year of OOO. The auction will be both a virtual and physical exhibition and will be held in the MAP building located at 218 West Saratoga Street, just within the Bromo Arts District. OOO is a highly celebrated exhibition-event, and a ‘one-night-only’ opportunity for patrons and collectors to acquire contemporary art at unbelievably low silent auction prices.

MAP is happy to continue KIDOOO, a youth version of Out of Order. KIDOOO was created as an opportunity for young artists to exhibit their work in a major arts venue, extending MAP's services to students in elementary, middle, and high school level art classes for children ages 5 to seventeen. MAP will host an art-making workshop on the day of install so participating artists can come to hang and stay to create! All craft materials will be provided! 

This year’s theme for OOO is Carnivàle, a nod to the 2003 HBO series that fictitiously followed the lives of carnival workers during the Dust Bowl. The origins of the “Carnival” proper are varied, though it is often thought of as a celebration of rebirth in nature. This spring we will do just that! Attendees of the event can expect entertainment by DJ Aran Keating of Ridiculous Entertainment, tarot card readings, face painting, ‘drag queens in theme’, and an after-party in the basement from 10 pm to 1 am.

Come dressed to impress and join the celebration in support of local & regional artists. Tickets are $40 on presale and $45 at the door. Tickets include light tastings and an open bar. All tickets also include free entry to KIDOOO, MAP's accompanying youth-driven OOO exhibition to be held on the 2nd floor of the MAP building the very same evening.  Parents/guardians of KIDOOO may attend at a discounted price of $25 presale and $30 at the door. Arrow Parking will be providing free parking for OOO guests at the Arrow Lot across the street from Maryland Art Place on Saratoga Street. Submission Requirements and Install:

Any artist is welcome to hang one original work of art on a first-come, first-served basis. The installation will take place Saturday, April 8, 2023, from 7 am-midnight. We will have donuts and coffee for the early birds and pizza and Karaoke in the basement from 9 pm to 11 pm for the late installers.  No need to sign up in advance, just come by MAP's first-floor gallery space @ 218 West Saratoga Street in the Bromo Arts District! You must be able to install your own work on April 8th to participate in the exhibition.

OOO is a self-install exhibition. MAP has some installation materials (drills, screws, nails), but we recommend bringing additional installation materials due to supply and demand.  All works must be for sale and will be silently auctioned on the evening of April 21.  Proceeds will mutually benefit MAP and the artist, all sales will be split 50/50. 

•  All work must come framed and ready to hang.  (size requirement is 40" x 40" or less)
•  Artists must install their own work on Artist Install day, Saturday, April 8 between the hours of 7 am and midnight
•  NO Application fee to exhibit!
•  Only ONE submission per artist
• Please document your work prior to arrival. This image will be used for virtual bidding purposes and submitted with your loan agreement.
• The work you include in Out of Order must be for sale. The proceeds from the silent auction are split 50/50 between the artist and MAP. All works will be virtually silent auctioned Friday, April 21, 2022, from 6 -10 pm

Zekes’ Coffee Shop and Maryland Art Place (MAP) are seeking artworks related to baseball, America’s favorite pastime. Baseball has played a major role throughout American history. We’re excited to get the ball rolling on this ‘call for artists’’ who pass their time painting, documenting, photographing or creating anything related to the love of the game! Let’s root, root, root for the ball team while knocking this show out of the park thanks to all our baseball art enthusiasts! Oriole-themed artwork is encouraged but not required! 

The reception will be held at Zeke’s Coffee located at 4719 Harford Road on Saturday, April 15 between 10 am and 12 pm. 

To be considered for the show, please fill out the following Google Form 

Requirements:

• Please deliver any selected artwork framed and ready to hang 
• Artwork should reference baseball in some way 
• All media welcome 

To submit more than one artwork you will have to complete a new google form for each submission.

Maryland Art Place in partnership with Hotel Indigo Baltimore is pleased to present "THE LIT HYPHAE TRADE”, a solo exhibition by Baltimore-based artist, Kevin Hailey.  The exhibition is on view at Hotel Indigo Baltimore, located at 24 West Franklin St. from January 12 to April 13. A public reception will take place, Thursday, February 16 from 6 to 8 pm. 

About:

The Lit Hyphae Trade is a series of paintings concerning the movements and dynamics of mycelium.  Hyphae are the branches in mycelium; a fungal network that is found everywhere from our guts to the deep woods. Mycelium acts as a communication for trade of nutrients and sustainer of life. The hyphae forms have proven to be an inspiring subject in my painting both in form and concept. The assumed chaos of the structure of mycelium under a microscope displays an eerily similar gesture to my paint strokes. I have unconsciously adapted this technique within the single dimensional paintings in this show. I have also begun to believe in cosmic mycelium further depicted in the paintings with rich cerebral-like color galaxies.

It is known that mycelium has adapted a unique “barter system” for nutrients with which the various plants and organisms are communicating, thus posing mycelium itself as language. Mycelium as a language never displays a one-sided front. This approach to communication and bartering allows the plants the nutrients needed through a holistic and balanced behavioral model. I believe this possible Lingua Franca, established for the underground fungal world, could provide an example of how humans may achieve a more symbiotic and connected relationship with other earthly organisms, and ultimately ourselves.

-  Kevin Hailey is a Baltimore-based artist, born in Colorado by way of the San Francisco Bay Area. He has exhibited in LA, San Francisco, Denver, Portland, Berlin, Brooklyn, and now Baltimore.

Zoë Charlton: Smokey Hallow

Maryland Art Place (MAP) is pleased to present Smokey Hallow, a solo exhibition by Baltimore artist Zoë Charlton that includes projected video, sculptures, and the prints that inspired Charlton's new body of artwork. Smokey Hallow is a homage to the former African-American community called Smokey Hollow which was founded in the 1890s in Tallahassee, Florida, the artist’s hometown. Communities like Smokey Hollow were hallow – sacred and communal Black spaces of care– that were (and still are) necessary as people built lives of autonomy, compromise, and solidarity. The video animates a 60” statue of a pregnant woman attributed to the Bangwa in Cameroon. In the projection, the statue journeys across birthing Black communities and landscapes behind her and consuming natural resources in her path.

Bio

Zoë Charlton makes large-scale figure drawings, primarily of women adorned with culturally loaded objects and covered in dense collaged landscapes. Charlton received her MFA degree from the University of Texas at Austin and participated in residencies, including Artpace Residency (TX), McColl Center for Art + Innovation (NC), Ucross Foundation (WY), the Skowhegan School of Painting (ME), and the Patterson Residency at the Creative Alliance (MD). Her work has been included in national and international exhibitions including The Delaware Contemporary (DE), the Harvey B. Gantt Center (NC), Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art (AR), Studio Museum of Harlem (NY), Contemporary Art Museum (TX), the Zacheta National Gallery of Art (Poland), and Haas & Fischer Gallery (Switzerland).  

She is a recipient of a Pollock-Krasner grant (2012) and a Rubys grant (2014). Museum collections include The Phillips Collection (DC), Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art (AR), Birmingham Museum of Art (AL), and Studio Museum in Harlem (NY). She is a co-founder of Kindred Creative Residence + Agro-ForesT, based in Fletcher, VT.  Kindred CRAFT is a BIPOC LGBTQIA+ led, inclusive collective of farmers, artists, educators, and activists committed to teaching sustainable living through regenerative agriculture, community outreach, and arts education. Charlton is a tenured, Full Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in The School of Art at George Mason University.

It's Breakfast Time! Zekes’ Coffee Shop and Maryland Art Place (MAP) are pleased to present The Breakfast Special: Cartoons & Cereal exhibition. We’re bringing back the nostalgia of childhood breakfast with a cartoon and cereal-themed exhibit! Do you recall spending your mornings perusing the back of a cereal box, or beating your siblings to that special prize hiding inside, all while you skimmed that week’s installment of your favorite cartoon? The Breakfast Special exhibition aims to celebrate just that!  

The reception will be held at Zeke’s Coffee located at 4719 Harford Road on Saturday, January 21 between 10 am and 12 pm. Zeke’s has house-made pop tarts and mini cereal boxes to fulfill your breakfast needs. This reception is breakfast-themed, and jammies are encouraged! 

ABOUT ZEKE’s: In 2005 Thomas Rhodes sold his first pound of coffee at the Baltimore Farmers Market. One year later he opened a retail space on Harford Road in Lauraville, and further expanded his operations to a fully functioning café just down the street at 4719 Harford Road in 2017. www.zekescoffee.com
