MAP, which is located in the Bromo Arts and Entertaniment District serves as an organization of “firsts” for artists; first major exhibition, first art sale and first art purchase.

In addition, MAP is now accepting applications for its 35 Year Anniversary Exhibition, opening October 6, 2016. Each year, MAP serves over 400 artists through exhibition opportunities in its gallery. MARYLAND ART PLACE ANNOUNCES CALL FOR ENTRY IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE CYBERWIRE: “CREATING CONNECTIONS”

Maryland Art Place (MAP), in partnership with The CyberWire is pleased to announce an open ‘Call for Entry’. An extension of MAP’s annual IMPRINT project, MAP is working with The CyberWire to offer “CREATING CONNECTIONS”, a commission and print replication project. The image of that artwork will be reproduced in a limited edition and presented to the guests of The CyberWire’s 3rd Annual Women in Cyber Security reception on September 27, 2016. Applications are due Saturday, August 27, 2016.

The goal of CyberWire’s reception is to facilitate connections among women working in cyber security. The concept of networks—social networks, computer networks and support networks—may be an important point of departure for creating the commissioned work. This commission is open to submissions from women artists living and working in the greater Baltimore metropolitan area.

We live in a time where cyberspace has become inextricably linked to the lives of individuals and organizations of all kinds. Cyberspace is the medium of global commerce and communication, and it is one of the most important factors in the social, political, and technological changes we see occurring today. The CyberWire provides concise and relevant daily briefings on the critical news happening across the global cyber security domain. In an industry overloaded with information, The CyberWire helps individuals and organizations rapidly find the news and information that's important to them.

The Women in Cyber Security Reception will bring together women from across the region and all different points on the career spectrum. This event will be an opportunity to meet, greet and share a common goal—empowering women to succeed in the cyber security field. Leaders from industry, academia, and government can reconnect and strengthen existing relationships while building new ones. Those just starting out in their careers have the chance to meet the technical and business professionals who are shaping the future of cyber security. This invitation-only event will be held at the Columbus Center overlooking Baltimore’s Inner Harbor.

MARYLAND ART PLACE (MAP) ANNOUNCES 9TH ANNUAL YOUNG BLOOD EXHIBITION

Thursday, July 14th, 2016 -- Maryland Art Place presents Young Blood, an annual exhibition of works by recent Baltimore-area Masters of Fine Art graduates. Curated every year by MAP’s Program Advisory Committee (PAC), Young Blood includes emerging artists from area colleges such as Maryland Institute College of Art, University of Maryland College Park, University of Maryland Baltimore County and Towson University. We are pleased to announce our 9th annual Young Blood artists; Tom Boram (UMBC), Elena DeBold (UMBC), Sarah Eargle (Towson), Taha Heydari (MICA), Kei Ito (MICA), Andrew Paul Keiper (MICA), Dane Winkler (UMCP) and Jowita Wyszomirska (UMCP). Located at 218 W. Saratoga Street within the Bromo Arts & Entertainment District, Young Blood will be on display from July 14th - August 20th, 2016. Please join us for the Young Blood exhibition opening at Maryland Art Place on July 14th from 6pm - 9pm. A panel discussion with the artists will follow on July 21 at 8pm.

This exhibition will highlight exceptional works ranging from painting, sculpture, installation, sound and video. Jowita Wyszomirska expands her drawings beyond the two-dimensional surface to explore edges of tangible and intangible; of what cannot be seen with the naked eye. Elena DeBold creates intimate, interactive, multisensory environments, which asks the audience to bear witness to the trauma of others. Tom Boram’s work involves awkward and over-complicated systems that make strange noises and/or endless television genre nonsense. Sarah Eargle uses a wide range of materials, exploring themes related to the home, such as collecting, play, humor, love, and loss. Kei Ito’s work addresses issues of generational connection and deep loss as he explores the materiality of photography as a medium. Andrew Paul Keiper’s recent work considers listening, noise and space, while taking on themes including the Manhattan Project, the Baltimore Uprising and the rhetorical implications of acoustics. Lastly, Taha Heydari’s paintings explore how international events are presented to society by mass media.

Young Blood has provided an important post-graduate platform for 72 transitioning Masters of Fine Arts students to date. Since 2008, this program has continually brought recent graduates together to make new connections and present special selections from their thesis exhibitions. According to MAP's former Program Advisory Chair, Cara Ober, “After achieving their Masters the next most important step for young artists is their professional debut in a reputable professional gallery". Many Young Blood artists continue on to be nominated and/or are offered either the prestigious Baker or Sondheim awards, if not elected a finalist.

MARYLAND ART PLACE PRESENTS CONTEMPORARY WORKS @ THE SUNNYFIELDS SHOWROOM

Thursday, May 19 at 5pm, Maryland Art Place (MAP) in partnership with Sunnyfields (a division of Delbert Adams) presents a showcase of local contemporary works of art. Located at 6305 Falls Road suite 100, Baltimore, MD, IMPACT at Sunnyfields will be exhibited from May 19 – July 22, 2016.

IMPACT is an annual, public art program developed in 2012 to extend Maryland Art Place’s reach to broader audiences. Each IMPACT project is unique and developed based on the partnering site. Current and previous partners include: ARTblocks, Neighborhood Design Center, Towson Town Center, Green Spring Station and the Jewish Community Center of Greater Baltimore.

Gina Adams of the Delbert Adams Construction Group reached out to MAP this spring to offer a public art partnership and an “open call” opportunity to area artists. Selected artists for IMPACT 2016 include: Jarek Sparaco, Carmen Martini, Victor Torres, Mike McConnell, Steven Shapiro, Sheryl Southwick, Grace Dobrow, Andrew Yff, Anne Cherubim, Emily Uchytil, Michel Anderson and Nancy O’D Wilson. Through different stages of their lives and careers, these artists exhibit varying perspectives of contemporary art practices, primarily in the area of abstraction and with exploratory processes. Interesting variances include Victor Torres’ bronze sculptures and Grace Dobrows, colorful, but muted and ethereal landscapes.

MAP’s Executive Director, Amy Cavanaugh Royce states, “This is the perfect IMPACT Project - it puts artworks, often only seen in a traditional gallery-setting, in a space where people are thinking about their homes and their aesthetic. Art is an important part of that design process”.

19TH ANNUAL OUT OF ORDER EXHIBITION EVENT & ANNOUNCEMENT OF THIS YEAR’S IMPRINT ARTISTS

MARYLAND ART PLACE (MAP) ANNOUNCES 19TH ANNUAL OUT OF ORDER EXHIBITION EVENT & ANNOUNCEMENT OF THIS YEAR’S IMPRINT ARTISTS

FRIDAY, APRIL 15, 2016 -- Maryland Art Place (MAP) eagerly anticipates the return of its 19th Annual Spring Benefit & Silent Auction, Out of Order (OOO) on Friday, April 15, 2016 at 7’oclock in the evening. The iconic fundraiser will take place at 218 West Saratoga Street (MAP’s original home!) located in the new Bromo Tower Arts and Entertainment District on Baltimore’s west side. One of the most celebrated and iconic annual events among the Baltimore arts community, Out of Order (OOO) is a one-night-only opportunity for collectors to acquire contemporary art at unbelievably low silent auction prices.

By covering the walls from floor to ceiling, Out of Order provides a salon-style display space for hundreds of artists to hang their work wherever they please. OOO plays host to a variety of artists and professionals practicing in the visual arts, and is a great opportunity for students and emerging artists to get their feet wet in Baltimore’s creative sector.

MAP expects up to 500 guests to filter in and out of the Out of Order exhibition event. Artists and art patrons will mix and mingle while enjoying music, libations and light fare. This year, MAP will host Pixilated Photobooth, serve Union Craft brews as well as a custom cocktail created by Aaron Joseph & Papa's Pilar Rum. In addition, Sweetgreens will provide delicious fare to MAP guests.

Proceeding the gallery portion of the event, MAP will host an after party in the basement of its building, the 14-Karat Cabaret. OOO artists and patrons are welcome to enjoy music provided by DJ Brandon Arinaldo and drinks at MAP’s Deep Eddy Vodka Tonic Bar!

Tickets to the April 15th OOO Exhibition Event and After Party are $40 pre-sale and $45 at the door. MAP would like to invite the press to join us for a “Wine O’Clock” Happy Hour during Artist Install day on April 12 from 5-7pm.

OOO is a unique way to get involved with Baltimore’s growing art scene while supporting one of Baltimore’s most established contemporary arts organizations. Proceeds from art sales are split equally between MAP and the artist. Revenue generated at Out of Order directly supports MAP’s programs, exhibitions and opportunities; furthering MAP’s mission to support emerging and mid-career artists and professionals throughout the year. MAP is pleased to offer an opportunity for artists to contribute their work to a local charity.

For the seventh year, participating artists may choose to donate their unsold art to The Art Connection in the Capital Region (ACCR,) a nonprofit organization that works to enrich the lives of under-served members of our community through the access to public art within the Greater Metropolitan Washington, DC area.

The 2016 Out of Order host committee includes Jeremy A. Batoff, Scott Burkholder, Bianca Hand, Chris Janian, Tace Joelle Loeb, Elizabeth Munfa, Patrick Rife, & Carlyn Thomas.

IMPRINT AT OUT OF ORDER

MAP will launch two new IMPRINT artists at OOO. IMPRINT is an annual program that highlights a specific contemporary artist excelling in their selected field. MAP Program Advisory Committee decided that in the program’s fifth and final year they would offer the opportunity to two artists, instead of a singular artist. The selected artworks will be featured for sale at OOO and limited edition replications will be sold throughout 2016. The selected artists will be highlighted on MAP’s website and at the OOO event. The 2016 selected IMPRINT artists are Mia Halton and Ali Seradge.

Mia Halton majored in art and religion at Kenyon College. While there she encountered the work of the French artist Jean Dubuffet. He was a seminal discovery for her, for his ability to access the dark side of inner life, and for his direct use of raw materiality. After a period of independent work, she studied at the Maryland Institute College of Art, where she received an MFA in 1985. While in graduate school, Halton worked on sheets of Luon plywood to create process-oriented paintings. At MICA she became involved with printmaking, a medium which she continued to pursue during an Artist’s Residency at the University of Maryland. Halton has shown her work extensively, including exhibitions at the Orange County Museum of Art, Baltimore Museum of Art, Clayworks in Baltimore, OK Harris Works of Art, New York, Gallery K, Washington, D.C., Malton Gallery, Cleveland and Gomez Gallery, Baltimore. Halton’s work resides in the collections of the U.S. State Department and Kenyon College, in addition to numerous private collections.

Ali Seradge applies Middle Eastern and Mediterranean myths to what screens show him of the current region. He also marries them to what the television told him in his youth, specifically the original Transformers cartoons and Science Fiction. Seradge watched the Iran-Iraq War coverage side by side with fictional and idealized versions of war in the afternoon animation and states that he sadly sees this same idealization taking place on the screens today.

Dog Star War Refugee #002 was selected for this year’s IMPRINT; an image within a much larger series. This picture details one of the many displaced residents from fleeing the temporary stations near the binary star Sirius. The subject is alien with partial images of conflict comprising the figure. Piles of pre-cut comics are assembled on colored paper in a loving macabre game to bring attention to an individual that would rarely be considered.
