Overview of Job Description

The Director of Programs develops and manages MAP’s exhibitions, special projects and education programs while coordinating efforts to secure their funding. The Director of Programs is responsible for in-kind solicitations and participates in all other program-related fundraising initiatives, including the preparation of narratives and budgets for grant proposals. The Director of Programs is also responsible for directing publicity and public relations relevant to MAP’s programs, and for actively pursuing coverage through all media sources.

EXHIBITIONS , PROGRAMS AND PROJECTS

*Works with Executive Director and Program Advisory Committee (PAC) to develop ideas for programs and program policy, suggests and recruits outside curators, researches artists for specific exhibitions, and prepares and tracks exhibition schedules. In addition, the Program Director will coordinate quarterly Program Advisory Committee meetings.

*Curates a minimum of two exhibitions per year, with the approval of the Executive Director.

*Responsible for all facets of invitation and catalogue production; coordination of work reviewed by guest curators, studio visits, collection of loan forms, resumes, insurance coverage, condition reports, scheduling and distribution of press clippings/catalogues to exhibiting artists.

*Organizes the marketing, preparation, and circulation of traveling exhibitions.

*Possesses familiarity with technology and new media.

*Responsible for the upkeep of the gallery throughout the year and for the installation/de-installation of all exhibitions, including the return of work to artists/purchasers in a timely manner.

FUNDRAISING AND DEVELOPMENT

*Works closely with Executive Director to secure funding for exhibitions, special projects, and education programs—including researching and preparing narrative and budgets for grant proposals.

*Works to secure in-kind contributions of design, typesetting, and printing services for program invitations and publications, in addition to shipping and installation services.

*Works closely with Executive Director and Benefit Committee to coordinate MAP’s Annual Benefit exhibition and auction, and other special events as needed.

PUBLIC RELATIONS, PRESS COVERAGE, AND DOCUMENTATION

*Responsible for compiling information, executing, and following-up on releases and public relations efforts for all exhibitions, projects and education programs. The Program Director will work towards building MAP’s media database and to forming relationships with key press contacts.

*Responsible for all exhibition documentation and maintenance of program files.

General: Will assist with MAP’s shared administrative tasks, including recruiting and overseeing MAP’s interns and volunteer base.

Requirements:

Candidates must possess a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree (but preferably a Master’s degree) in Art History, with an emphasis in Contemporary and/or Modern Art. Candidates possessing an MFA will also be considered.

Candidates will have a minimum of five years of curatorial experience; a distinguished record of exhibitions and publications; strong leadership, interpersonal, planning and organizational skills; excellent written, oral communication, and presentation skills. In addition, s/he must have good problem solving skills, be able to organize and manage multiple projects concurrently, and demonstrate diplomacy in dealings with a small staff and a diverse group of supporters.
