News:

Welcome new staff!

We welcome the newest member of the MAP staff: Jessica D’Argenio, Development Assistant.

Jessica was one of our summer interns and decided she liked us enough to stay.

She graduated from McGill University in Montreal, where she studied Economics, Art History, Italian and French. She had much to contribute to MAP as an intern and we are lucky to have her now as a staff member. Thanks to her, lunchtime conversation at MAP has markedly improved since she is an avid reader and moviegoer. Welcome, Jessica!

The exhibition, which is inspired by the preeminent book on visual culture of the same name written by John Berger in 1972, focuses on the concealed ideologies and icons manifested in visual culture. The artists selected for this exhibition each embody a set of visual images that is unique to their individual work, commenting on topics such as suburban culture, memory, and perception through the use of signs and symbols in a variety of media.

Q&A
with artist René Treviño

René Treviño is a Baltimore-based artist, who works in a variety of 2-D media. He is an Artist-in-Residence at Baltimore’s Creative Alliance at the Patterson, and is represented by C. Grimaldis Gallery. Here, René talks about his background, his work, and his influences:

Can you tell us a bit about yourself?
I was born in Texas and lived there for 23 years. My family is of Mexican descent, my grandparents immigrated to the United States, neither of my grandmothers ever learned to read or speak English. I had a very Catholic and working class upbringing…I have a huge family. I moved to New York in 1996 and lived there for 7 years. I received my BFA from the School of Visual Arts (NYC) in 2003 and then I moved to Baltimore in 2003 to study at MICA in The Mount Royal School of Art. I received my MFA in 2005.

Your work appears to be largely informed by history: historical figures, events, icons, old photographs, etc. Can you discuss your draw to the past?
History is so subjective…so many blurred lines and so much distortion. Context and point of view is very important. As a gay Mexican-American, I have always felt somewhat excluded or underrepresented by history. By working from old photographs and using history as a backbone for a lot of my work, I can reweave these "lessons" of the past. My work is an attempt to make our already complicated history even more complicated…the more layers that I present, the closer I can get to something that might resemble truth.

I've heard you speak about "heroes" in past work, and the mythologies that lead us to these monolithic icons. Who are the heroes in your work, and what do they represent for you?
One person's hero is another person's villain…it depends on who tells the story. That said, there are certain men who transcend their own histories. I assembled a group of really strong, virile and masculine men in life-sized graphite drawings on paper for my most recent show at C. Grimaldis Gallery. When I started the series (titled Saguaro Warriors) I quickly came to see them as an army…an army for a new kind of hypothetical war. I included Sitting Bull and William Howard Taft but also Dolce & Gabbana and Cary Grant. These men embody their times, but by bringing them together I imagine them as a "Justice League" of sorts who can counter the evils of man with their wide-ranging abilities and intellect.
