Fall Benefit

Vanity Affair

Nov 5, 2009

Check out photos from the event:

Facebook Images

The Board of Trustees and staff of MAP thanks the attendees, supporters, and volunteers of MAP’s fall benefit exhibition and gala, Vanity Affair, held on Thursday, November 5, 2009.

Inspired by the extraordinary portraits of Vanity Fair magazine, the Benefit Committee created an elegant evening, featuring a selection of photo-portraits by internationally-renowned fashion photographer Dean Alexander, a silent auction of more than forty hand-selected objets d’art, and a live auction of rare experiences.

We are pleased to report that this year’s gala grossed $116,800, marking our most successful benefit event in the past three years! As an organization that values the contributions of its artists, MAP will return 40% of each sale to the exhibitors. Proceeds from the event will directly support MAP’s programming and educational initiatives throughout the upcoming year.

MAP extends a special thank you to the Host Committee and Benefit Committee; participating artists; and our outstanding volunteers and interns. They truly made this a stellar event.

We appreciate your support!

Q&A

With David Page & Lauren Schott

A Baltimore-based Artist Couple
Members of the MSAC Visual Artists Registry

David Page born in South Africa
MFA University of Maryland, College Park
Diploma Fine Art, Cape Technikon, South Africa

Lauren Schott born in Detroit, MI
BFA, Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, Halifax

Lauren, what led you to create jewelry? And David, what inspires your sculptures and drawings?

LS: I was a dyslexic child given art class for good grades. At 15, I took a jewelry class. After the first session, I came home and announced to my family I was going to make jewelry for the rest of my life.

DP: I have a collection of hand-sized or hand-relative objects that I find compelling. Most are quite ordinary. Others are startling. They are all versions of simple machines—the inclined plane and the lever—expressed as wedges, screws, handles, etc. Once divorced from their intended purpose(s), these objects may appear threatening.

How would you describe your working style/your studios?

LS: I am in my studio everyday. I make my living from jewelry work and repair. I love what I do, and enjoy when I get to make my own designs, but I am just as happy making a traditional engagement ring.

DP: I use my sketchbook to pose and solve problems, sometimes making intermediary pieces using foam or plywood. I choose materials based on what is necessary or rational for the proposed piece or series.

I maintain two studios. One is in an industrial building where I do anything that makes a noise, smells bad or might burn the house down. That is where I keep my welding equipment and larger tools, and my small collection of motorcycles in various stages of repair. My other studio for cleaner work is in the basement of my home and has a Dickensian feel to it—cutting tables and rows of industrial sewing machines.

How do you choose the media for your work?

DP: For some of my work I choose wood because it is warm and inviting and contrasts with or softens the invasive threat implied by the form. Leather is more complex. While it communicates luxury and tactile appeal, it carries the history of the slain animal.

LS: After that first [jewelry making] class, I got an apprenticeship to learn the jewelry trade. In the 1970s, jewelry making was a trade, not as much an art form. So I learned a trade that I turned into my artistic practice.

What are some of the rewards and challenges of being an artist couple?

DP: I never have to justify to my wife why I have just spent the last month of my life on some hair-brained pursuit or irrational enterprise. Professional jealousy is an unavoidable problem.

LS: Money and housekeeping. We are looking for a rich husband and loving wife. But seriously, we balance pretty well and are both selfish when it comes to our studio time. So the main thing to remember is that there is another person in the relationship and you need to make time for them out side of making art.

We hope you enjoyed our Q&A, to let us know your thoughts, or to submit your own work for consideration, please contact Esther Kim at ekim@mdartplace.org.
