Public Art Opportunity
Seeking Artist for: “P U L S E: Golden Triangle, a Neighborhood on the Move” Project at Farragut North Metro Station / Connecticut Avenue and K Street, NW
Project Budget: $75,000
The Golden Triangle Business Improvement District (Golden Triangle), with funding from the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities (DCCAH) and support from Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority Art in Transit Program (WMATA), is seeking a local artist(s) with previous public art experience to create permanent public art for the Farragut North Metro station entrance, at the northeast corner of Connecticut Avenue and K Street, NW.
The project, “Pulse: Golden Triangle, a Neighborhood on the Move” (“Pulse”), is a complementary element of a Public Realm and Streetscape Design Program initiated by the Golden Triangle in coordination with D.C. Government agencies and area urban planners to revitalize the cityscape of the Connecticut Avenue corridor. This project will address the theme “Pulse”, referring to the movement of people, trains, buses, and vehicles that create the rhythm of activity at the intersection. This site is the heart of the Golden Triangle neighborhood and reflects a multitude of business, cultural, and community interests and serves as a gateway to one of the District’s busiest intersections that includes national parks, retail shops, and restaurants.
Project Description: The Golden Triangle is soliciting this Call to create public art for installation along the granite-clad surfaces of the Farragut North Metro Station entrance at Connecticut Ave. and K St.: (1) along the upper eastern wall of the station entrance and (2) along the eastern wall of the station from the upper entrance of the station to the bottom of the escalator. Though not required, the artist may choose to also propose art at location (3), along the wall above and perpendicular to the escalator.
Selecting Artists and Awarding Commissions: A Selection Panel of art professionals, Golden Triangle Board members, and community representatives, will choose three finalists to develop concepts for artwork based on the quality of the artists’ portfolio. Finalists will be given a detailed overview of the project and will receive a $500 honorarium to create a site-specific artwork proposal that reflects the interests of the surrounding Golden Triangle neighborhood. The three finalists will present one proposal each for review by the Selection Panel. The Panel will review the proposals and recommend one final proposal.
The Selection Panel-recommended artwork proposal will be presented to members of the Golden Triangle Board of Directors, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority Board of Directors, and the Commission on Fine Arts for approval. Upon approval, the artist will further develop and fabricate the artwork for installation.
Artist Eligibility: This Call is open to local professional artists who reside in Washington D.C., Virginia, and Maryland though preference will be given to artists who reside in Washington D.C. The Selection Panel will give preference to artists who have experience in the design, development, and execution of public art projects. Selection procedures will be fair, open and competitive and the Panel will consider qualified artists regardless of race, color, creed, national origin, gender, marital status, sexual orientation, disability, religious or political affiliation, or age.
Project Budget: The maximum budget for the art project is $75,000 (artist fee and honoraria included). The artist fee must not exceed 20% of the proposed artwork budget. The artist will develop a budget for design development, fabrication, and installation of the artwork. Finalists must thoroughly consider all potential costs prior to submitting a proposal. The final budget must include all costs for design, fabrication, project documentation, installation, and handling of the artwork. The budget for the artwork outlined in this Call to Artists is subject to the availability of funds.
Application Procedures: Interested artists must submit the following materials to apply:
